NGOs challenge Indonesian government and industry on palm oil claims

At London seminar between Indonesian government and palm oil industry
representatives, social and environmental NGOs warn that Indonesia's
palm oil industry continues to be linked to deforestation and biodiversity
losses, human rights abuses and displacement of indigenous peoples
and local communities.

Facing the Challenges in South-East Asia
Covering Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and
the Philippines, this report synthesizes the results of a consultative
process that examined the legal frameworks, actual reality on the
ground, and responses of various local organizations, governments
and civil society in 2007. The process, 'Listening, Learning and Sharing',
was led by the World Agroforestry Centre and the Regional Community
Forestry Training Center for Asia and the Pacific (RECOFTC), as members
of the global Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI), assisted by Forest
Peoples Programme (FPP).

Sumalindo and the community of Long Bagun, district of Kutai Barat,
East Kalimantan province
Pokja Hutan Kaltim (the 'East Kalimantan Working Group on Forests')
has been observing the development of the timber legality standard
and its verification system, as well as the Forest Stewardship Council
(FSC) certification of the PT Sumalindo Lestari Jaya logging concession
since June 2003. This is the report of the case study into the local

A report on Asia Pulp and Paper's operations in Sumatra, Indonesia
By Rivani Noor and Rully Syumanda - discusses the social, economic
and environmental impacts of APP's operations. Chapter One - an overview
of Indonesia's forestry industry development paradigm, which led to
the industrial tree plantation policy (or Hutan Tanaman Industri [HTI])
to satisfy the pulp and paper industry's demand for raw materials.
Two - an overview of APP and its operations in Sumatra. Three - the
environmental impacts of APP's operations in the provinces of Riau
and Jambi. Four - the social and economic impacts of APP's operations,
as well as the impacts on local communities. Five - the rights of
workers employed by APP. The report ends with a summary of the impacts
