Parks with Peoples, or without?

Indigenous Peoples from throughout the globe are assessing the progress made so far in the 5th World Parks Congress. There has been significant recognition of the roles of Indigenous Peoples in the management and conservation of resources, and at times recognition of our rights to our lands and territories. Yet at same time destructive stereotypes have again found voice.

At this, the second Indigenous Peoples Press Conference, the following Indigenous leaders will be speaking out

  1. Joji Carino, Ibaloy Igorot,Philippines - 'Progress of Indigenous Peoples' Participation in this Congress'
  2. John Letai, Maasai, Kenya - 'Indigenous Pastoralists in Protected Areas in East Africa, do we still have hope?'
  3. Manuel Santiander, Mapuche, Chile - 'The situation in South America'

"Numerous experiences have demonstrated that conservation without people's participation has failed. It is thus pragmatic and less costly if the active participation of indigenous communities is ensured in the monitoring and enforcement of Parks, employing indigenous knowledge. The potential cost of legal battles and of conflict management will be reduced or eliminated with the participation of those directly affected by the establishment of any Park."
