Oil palm credit freeze extended to whole World Bank Group
In response to the NGOs' appeal letter (below), World Bank President Robert Zoellick has just announced that he has frozen all World Bank funding of the palm oil sector pending the development of a comprehensive approach in line with the Bank's commitment to 'sustainable environmental and social practices' .

IFC agrees to suspend funding for palm oil sector in response to NGO critique

In response to an appeal by a global coalition of NGOs, IFC / World Bank President Robert Zoellick has agreed to suspend IFC funding of the oil palm sector pending the development of a revised strategy for dealing with the troubled sector.

IFC suspends funding to palm oil sector
Following appeals from NGOs and a critical audit of the IFC's financing of oil palm in Indonesia, the IFC has stated it will halt funding of the sector until it develops a comprehensive new strategy and finds ways to address the legal and institutional barriers in Indonesia that hinder compliance with the IFC's and RSPO's standards.

NGOs call on IFC to freeze financing of palm oil sector in Indonesia
In the light of the critical audit and after carefully assessing the IFC 'Management Response' to it a coalition of NGOs have called on the IFC to suspend financing the oil palm sector in Indonesia until after the IFC reviews its approach and develops a participatory strategy to ensure full compliance with its Performance Standards.

An internal IFC report (by its Compliance Advisor Ombudsman) has conceded that by providing loans to the Wilmar palm oil trading group, the IFC has allowed commercial interests to override its social and environmental standards.
