November 2008
Fifteen indigenous people and civil society representatives, supported
by Forest Peoples Programme and Rights
& Democracy, travelled from various parts of the African continent
to Nigeria to directly inform the African Commission on Human and
Peoples Rights of the issues facing indigenous peoples in their home
countries.
The events in Abuja included a training programme to help the
delegates prepare. This formed part of a series of training sessions
about the African Commission that are taking place in different
countries in Central Africa.
Several of the delegates also spoke at a special event focused on
the rights of indigenous women. The event was chaired by the Commission's
Special Rapporteur on Women and was jointly organised with IWGIA.
