New film exposes the privatisation of Indonesia's coastal forests
'Selling the Seas' a film produced by The Ecologist Film Unit
with the Indonesian NGO KIARA and FPP exposes the growing public
opposition to the Indonesian government's plans to clear a further
700,000 hectares of coast, much of it mangrove, threatening
the livelihoods of fisherfolk and other coastal peoples. KIARA
demands that northern supermarkets and certifiers pay more attention
to the harsh social and environmental costs of inappropriate,
industrial shrimp and prawn production.

Protest Against WWF's Plans to Launch Aquaculture Stewardship
Council
Over 70 human rights and environmental groups from around the
world express their outrage at the planned launch of the World
Wildlife Fund's Aquaculture Stewardship Council. Their concern
is that the proposed certification of industrial production
of shrimp and salmon favours the vested interests of the aquaculture
industry, without reflecting or taking into account the wishes
of local communities and indigenous peoples who live alongside
shrimp and salmon farms.

Resuscitating
the Sundarbans:
Customary Use of Biodiversity & Traditional Cultural Practices
in Bangladesh
This report highlights the connection between biodiversity conservation
and forest peoples' livelihoods and customary use. It shows
how the current Forest Department-led management as well as
shrimp (prawn) farming continue to threaten the long-term survival
of the forest and the people. The traditional resource users
call for an urgent shift towards community-based and collaborative
management of the Sundarbans to ensure a future both for its
biodiversity and its people.
