Hon. Ms. Emili Hawit,

RE: “EL FARO” SHRIMP COMPANY AND THE GULF OF FONSECA

We would like to sincerely congratulate you for your determined effort to bring to justice the society denominated “Shrimp Company El Faro S.A. de C.V.” We have followed with increasing concern for years the news of the expansion of shrimp farming in the Gulf of Fonseca, particularly in the Ramsar Site and “La Berberia” Protected Area. The environmental and social impacts of shrimp farming in the area have caused great concern from the local to the international level.

We were aware that a legal case was taken against the Environmental License for the expansion of El Faro’s operations. We are now very glad to learn that you have urged the relevant authorities to take penal action against the company El Faro for the environmental damage caused by its operations, to cancel its Environmental License, and to remove the infrastructure built by the company in the lagoon during its latest expansion.

We wish to express our support to your effort and trust that you will firmly continue your work for the welfare of the local communities and the wetlands of the Gulf of Fonseca.

Sincerely yours,

Maurizio Farhan Ferrari
Wetland Forest Peoples Coordinator
