Further update to CERD regarding the continued need for urgent action with relation to the indigenous lands of Raposa Serra do Sol
Further to the submission of July 2009, (see below) this update reports that indigenous peoples' rights in Brazil are being seriously threatened. In addition, the Brazilian government has still failed to provide the full accounting of the status of the violent attacks against the indigenous peoples of Raposa, as requested by CERD.

Update to CERD regarding the situation of indigenous peoples in Raposa Serra do Sol
Report summarizes events that have taken place since February 2009, including an important Supreme Court decision (see below) which had the immediate effect of allowing the removal of the remaining non-indigenous occupants from RSS, but which may have negative impacts on indigenous peoples in Brazil as a whole in the long run.

Supreme Court upholds Raposa Serra do Sol as indigenous area
After nearly three-and-a-half decades of waiting for recognition of their land rights, on 19 March the Supreme Court of Brazil finally affirmed the constitutionality of the Raposa Serra do Sol lands, demarcated ten years ago by the State, and has ordered the Government of Brazil to resume its removal of all non-indigenous settlers

CERD letter to Government of Brazil

UN Commitee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) expresses grave concerns that the security and respect for the land rights of the Macuxi, Wapichana, Taurepang, Ingaricó and Patamona indigenous peoples of Raposa Serra do Sol (RSS) in the State of Roraima, Brazil “has not improved or has even deteriorated.” Strong recommendations include completion of “the final and total removal of non-indigenous occupants of the RSS indigenous lands”. CERD calls upon the Government to report to them by 30 November 2007.
