Indigenous peoples' struggle for land rights highlighted as World Bank grants government $200,000 to develop national plans aimed at slowing deforestation
The Amerindian Peoples Association is urging the government of Guyana and international agencies to resolve indigenous peoples' land rights issues before continuing with its Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and World Bank-funded projects to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). Indigenous leaders say the government has grabbed traditional lands, sometimes demarcated without the knowledge of the indigenous communities, and are calling on the government to uphold its international obligations to indigenous peoples.
