Wampis people successfully evict illegal gold miners from their territory and call on Peruvian government to enforce laws to protect activists

On the 13 July 2017, about a hundred representatives of the Wampis people successfully and peacefully intervened to evict illegal miners from the site on the Santiago river where they have been working for the last five years. The action was convened by the Wampis territorial government and supported by the local municipal authority and resulted in the eviction of miners and destruction of dredging equipment. Prior to their intervention, the Wampis had announced their intention in a public statement calling on Peru’s central government to take effective measures to address illegal mining on their territory. As a result of the intervention there have been reprisals against Wampis activists and four individuals have been injured.
