The “green monster” of sugarcane plantations carpeting Colombia’s Cauca valley conceals a multitude of human rights violations, finds a new report out today. They include violence, killings, land loss, displacement, denial of free, prior and informed consent, denial of rights to livelihood resources and the right to a healthy environment, among others. The sector in Colombia is also tainted by evidence of corporate abuse linked to ties with illegal armed groups and repression of social leaders.

In Cauca, the Black Communities’ unarmed and autonomous Guardia Cimarrona made heroic efforts to control their ancestral territories and protect their people during the pandemic, setting up checkpoints to make sure bio-safety protocols were enforced on people entering their communities. The checkpoints helped keep virus infection levels at zero for three months.

La autónoma y desarmada Guardia Cimarrona de las comunidades negras hizo esfuerzos heroicos para controlar sus territorios ancestrales y proteger a su gente, estableciendo puestos de control para asegurarse de que los protocolos de bioseguridad se exigieran a las personas que entraban a sus comunidades. Los puestos de control ayudaron a mantener los niveles de infección de virus en cero durante tres meses.

La Guardia Cimarrona non armée des communautés noires autonomes a déployé des efforts héroïques pour contrôler leurs territoires ancestraux et protéger leur population, mettant en place des postes de contrôle où l’on veillait à ce que les personnes qui entrent dans leurs communautés suivent les protocoles de biosécurité. Les points de contrôle ont permis, pendant trois mois, de maintenir à zéro le niveau d’infection du virus.
