In the late 19th Century, a large group of Dayak Bahau settled on the Meraseh river, a tributary of the Upper Mahakam in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. For a century, they remained largely undisturbed at Long Isun until the 1980s when the government resettled them to the banks of the Mahakam river.

Delegates from Africa, Asia and Latin America heard first-hand testimonies of the growing harm facing forest communities around the world. From Indonesia, many cases demonstrated that Government plans and policies favoured the interests of large companies to the detriment of unprotected communities. They have called on the Government to protect the rights of the communities.
