Event Report: "The Global Indigenous Movement: Past Achievements, Future Challenges"

On 26th March 2015, The Social Movements and Civil Society Research Group at City University London (SMCSRG) held its third evening event, a talk on The Global Indigenous Movement: Past Achievements Future Challenges. SMCSRG was delighted to host long-time indigenous peoples’ rights activist and current Director of the Forest Peoples Programme, Joji Cariño, to speak on these themes. The event was Chaired by Dr Mauro Barelli, a Senior Lecturer specialising in minority and indigenous peoples’ rights at The City Law School.

Case Merits: The Kaliña and Lokono Peoples of Suriname

This report concerns the merits of a petition received by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IAHCR) on February 16, 2007.

The petition alleges that the State of Suriname has violated the rights protected in Articles 3 (right to judicial personality), 21 (right to property) and 25 (right to judicial protection) of the American Convention on Human Rights in connection with Articles 1 and 2 thereof to the prejudice of the Kaliña and Lokono peoples.

COMUNICADO DE PRENSA: La minería controlada por los indígenas en Colombia se encuentra bajo ataque luego de la muerte de un defensor de derechos humanos

Un importante defensor de los derechos humanos indígenas ha sido asesinado por hombres armados.El día jueves 7 de abril a las 8 de la noche, el señor Fernando Salazar Calvo fue brutalmente asesinado a tiros afuera de su residencia. El señor Salazar era un destacado defensor de los derechos humanos y un miembro de la comunidad del Resguardo Indígena Cañamomo Lomaprieta (Caldas) en Colombia.
