IACHR Tackles Violence Against Native Peoples in Costa Rica

SAN JOSE, May 11 2015 (IPS) - After years of violence against two indigenous groups in Costa Rica, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) demanded that the government adopt measures by May 15 to protect the life and physical integrity of the members of the two communities.

SAN JOSÉ, 8 may 2015 (IPS) - Años de olas de violencia contra dos pueblos indígenas en Costa Rica llevaron a la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) a exigir al gobierno que adopte antes del 15 de este mes “medidas para resguardar la vida y la integridad” de los integrantes de sus comunidades.

Autoridades tradicionales del Resguardo Indígena Cañamomo Lomaprieta, en Colombia, condenan el asesinato de dos médicos tradicionales del vecino Resguardo Indígena San Lorenzo (mayo de 2015).

Precautionary Measures issued by Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in favor of the Teribe (Bröran) and the Bribri indigenous peoples of Costa Rica.

Due to a series of violent attacks and threats against these two indigenous peoples in the last few years, the Commission decided that the acts and omissions of the State were not adequate and ordered Costa Rica, together with the affected peoples, to take the measures necessary to better protect the lives and physical integrity of the two indigenous peoples and their members.  The State has 15 days to respond to the Commission and the Commission will continue to monitor the matter.

Medidas cautelares ordenadas por la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos a favor de los pueblos indígenas Teribe (Bröran) y Bribri de Costa Rica

Debido a una serie de amenazas y ataques violentos contra estos dos pueblos indígenas en los últimos años, la Comisión decidió que las acciones y omisiones del Estado no fueron adecuadas y ordenó que Costa Rica, junto con los pueblos afectados, tome las medidas necesarias para proteger la vida y la integridad física de los dos pueblos indígenas y sus miembros.  El Estado cuenta con 15 días para responder a la  Comisión. Por su parte, la Comisión seguirá de cerca el asunto.Se adjunta:
