New publication by CED: A Simplified Guide to Forest Monitoring for Local Communities

The Centre for the Environment and for Development (CED) has published a new guide on forest monitoring for use by local communities. The aim of the guide is to inform and raise awareness of the benefits of forest monitoring by communities, and to present the main methods and necesssary tools to ensure good forest governance. It is intended to provide local forest communities with the necessary skills and tools to effectively identify and denounce activities of illegal forest exploitation taking place around them.

Guide simplifié d’observation externe des forêts à l’usage des communautés

Le Centre pour l’Environnement et le Développement (CED) a publié un nouveau guide sur la observation externe des forêts à l’usage des communautés. Il vise à informer et sensibiliser sur le bien-fondé de la surveillance de la forêt par les communautés et présenter les principales mesures et les outils nécessaires pour assurer une bonne surveillance de la forêt. 

En somme, il s'agit de fournir aux communautés les préalables pour identifier et dénoncer de manière efficace les activités d'exploitation forestière illégale qui se déroulent autour d'aux. 

Palm oil producers, NGOs launch responsible palm oil initiative at RSPO AGM

Medan, Indonesia, 13 November 2013 – Progressive palm oil companies and environmental and social NGOs today launched the Palm Oil Innovation Group (POIG) at the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil’s (RSPO) Annual General Assembly. The group is made up of producers and civil society organizations and includes Agropalma, DAABON, New Britain Palm Oil, as well as WWF, Rainforest Action Network (RAN), Forest Peoples Programme and Greenpeace.

On Monday October 21, 2013 the Government of Guyana and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a contract for the Amerindian Land Titling Project under the Guyana/Norway Guyana REDD Investment Fund (GRIF) arrangement. This signing took place during the opening session of the Seventh Annual Meeting of the National Toshaos Council and is heralded by President Donald Ramotar as fulfilling a promise made to the Amerindian people in the PPP’s manifesto. Campaigning? According to another government official Minister of Finance Ashni Singh, the project will give Amerindians control over the lands that belong to them. The project, according to the government is to facilitate the titling and demarcation of Amerindian lands.

Kampung Zanegi di Kabupaten Merauke Provinsi Papua suram dan sunyi, berkebalikan dengan gemuruhnya suara bulldozer dan chainsaw yang terdengar dari kejauhan. Di ujung sebuah deretan rumah sederhana, Yosefa, 31 tahun, seorang ibu asli Orang Malind beranak tiga, membungkuk di samping tungku untuk mengorek-ngorek bara yang hampir mati. Ia menimang anaknya berumur tiga tahun untuk menidurkannya. Mata anak itu kurus dan cekung. Yosefa sendiri kurus kering  dan lesu akibat kurang gizi, ia mengusap bulir keringat di dahinya yang panas karena demam. Ia menceritakan kisah sebuah kampung di ambang kematian.
