Exploring the link between culture and biodiversity – CBD COP13

The important link between cultural and biological diversity was highlighted as part of the “Múuch'tambal” Summit on Indigenous Experience: Traditional Knowledge, biological and cultural diversity at COP13 today.

Among those speaking at the thirteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP13) were indigenous peoples and local communities from around the world, including Mexico, Japan, Chile, and the Solomon Islands.

The thirteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP13) will be held in Cancun, Mexico, from 4 to 17 December 2016. For indigenous peoples and local communities this will be a platform to highlight their contributions to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and celebrate the importance and vibrancy of traditional knowledge and cultural diversity.

Para los pueblos indígenas y las comunidades locales se trata de una plataforma para destacar sus contribuciones a la conservación y la utilización sostenible de la diversidad biológica, y para celebrar la importancia y la vitalidad de los conocimientos tradicionales y la diversidad cultural.

La treizième réunion de la Conférence des Parties à la Convention sur la diversité biologique (COP13 CDB) se tiendra à Cancun, au Mexique, du 4 au 17 décembre 2016. Pour les peuples autochtones et les communautés locales, cet événement sera l’occasion de mettre en évidence leurs contributions à la conservation et à l’utilisation durable de la biodiversité, et de célébrer l’importance et le dynamisme des savoirs traditionnels et de la diversité culturelle.

Participation, consent, traditional knowledge and customary sustainable use in protected areas: the World Conservation Congress

Best practices around indigenous peoples and the establishment, expansion, governance and management of protected areas was the focus of a discussion at the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s World Conservation Congress.

The event, organised by Forest Peoples Programme, brought together 14 people at a knowledge café to discuss implementation of elements of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Plan of Action on Customary Sustainable Use.

Rights in World Heritage Conservation – an IUCN workshop

The intricacies of rights-based work within World Heritage Conservation will be explored at the IUCN’s World Conservation Congress this week.

A joint workshop, by the University of Lucerne in Switzerland, ICOMOS, the IUCN, ICCROM and Forest Peoples Programme, will discuss challenges in achieving greater progress in rights-based approaches around the 1,052 official World Heritage sites, and those vying for the status.
