Deforestation and forest degradation have increased in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), despite the government’s commitment to safeguard its forests.
Illegal logging, unsustainable mining, commercial agriculture, and urban demand for fuelwood represent only some of the major long-term threats to the forests. By contrast, the traditional livelihood strategies of indigenous and local communities show a capacity to coexist with forests sustainably.
La déforestation et la dégradation des forêts ont augmenté en République démocratique du Congo (RDC) malgré l’engagement du gouvernement de protéger ses forêts. Les activités commerciales d’envergure industrielle constituent d’importantes menaces directes à long terme sur les forêts. En revanche, les strategies et modes de subsistance traditionnelles des communautés autochtones et locales montrent qu’elles peuvent coexister durablement avec les forêts.
In March 2014, the World Bank Board of directors gave final approval for a grant of USD$73 million towards the construction of the Inga 3 Dam on the Congo River in the Bas Congo Province of the DRC. Inga 3 represents the first phase of a vast programme to create the largest and most powerful hydroelectric network in the world, even surpassing the China’s Three Gorges Dam.

La presa de Inga 3 representa la primera fase de un enorme programa para crear la red hidroeléctrica más grande y potente del mundo, que superaría incluso a la represa de las Tres Gargantas en China. Compuesta por una pared y seis centrales hidroeléctricas, su construcción dará lugar a la inundación del Valle de Bundi, convirtiéndolo en un lago gigante paralelo al río Congo.
En mars 2014, le Conseil des administrateurs de la Banque mondiale approuvait définitivement un financement à hauteur de 73 millions de dollars américains pour la construction du barrage Inga 3 sur le fleuve Congo dans la province du Bas-Congo, dans la RDC. Le barrage Inga 3 constitue la première phase d’un vaste programme visant à créer le réseau hydroélectrique le plus important et le plus puissant au monde, qui dépassera même le barrage des Trois-Gorges en Chine. Comprenant un mur de barrage et six centrales hydroélectriques, il entraînera l’inondation de la vallée de Bundi, pour la transformer en un gigantesque lac parallèle au fleuve Congo.

Tanzania indigenous organisations have written to the World Bank to express their concern at the overall weakening of the policy requirements for indigenous peoples in the draft of the proposed World Bank Environmental and Social Safeguards (ESS). Concerns include implications for the denial of the existence and rights of indigenous peoples under international human rights law, lack of meaningful and effective participation, forced eviction and lack of access to information.
