The Indigenous Peoples welcomed this news with enthusiasm after fighting for years to defend their lands and the negative impacts of the company’s presence. They are demanding annulment of the oil lot to avoid further companies appearing.

La empresa GeoPark Perú S.A.C., que operaba el Lote 64 superpuesto a los territorios indígenas Wampís y Achuar, se retira. The Chilean oil company GeoPark Peru S.A.C. has irrevocably withdrawn from the Lot 64 Licence Contract in Loreto, Peru. In the statement by Petroperu it was noted that the company’s withdrawal was because of contractual terms due to a “force majeure” situation on the petroleum lot.

The Wampis Nation filed a criminal complaint against the oil company GeoPark Peru S.A.C for increasing the risk of COVID-19 infection amongst the communities of the Morona River by continuing its operations during the pandemic.

La nación wampís denunció penalmente en la vía de prevención del delito a la empresa petrolera GeoPark Perú por incrementar los riesgos de contagio al COVID-19 a la población wampís al haber continuado sus operaciones durante el Estado de Emergencia Nacional.

Faced with the ineffectiveness of the Peruvian State amid the advance of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Peruvian Amazon, various Indigenous Peoples have taken actions and proposed intercultural measures to protect their territories and the wellbeing of their communities.
