Indigenous peoples' right to free, prior and informed consent and the World Bank's extractive industries review

Free prior and informed consent (FPIC) has been recognised and accepted by a number of inter-governmental organizations and international bodies. The World Bank Group (WBG), however, is a notable exception despite two major reviews which recommend incorporating FPIC into WBG policy and practice specially referring to indigenous peoples. This article assesses the extractive industries review and its implications for the WBG, and examines FPIC, its components and its basis in international law.
