Un resultado decepcionante para los pueblos indígenas en la XI reunión de la Conferencia de las Partes (COP 11) en el Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biológica (CDB) celebrada en Hyderabad, India, del 8 al 19 de octubre de 2012: las Partes no lograron adoptar una decisión para actualizar la terminología del CDB «comunidades indígenas y locales» a «pueblos indígenas y comunidades locales», debido a la resistencia de algunas de las Partes.

Esta semana pueblos indígenas de todo el mundo se han unido a líderes de gobiernos internacionales en la 11.ª Conferencia de las Partes en el Convenio sobre la Diversidad Biológica (COP 11) en Hyderabad, India. Durante esta importante conferencia se mantendrán negociaciones cruciales relacionadas con los pueblos indígenas, los cuales están reivindicando la protección de sus tierras tradicionales y llamando la atención sobre las dimensiones sociales y culturales de la conservación y el respeto de sus derechos.  Al mismo tiempo, las Partes en el Convenio evalúan el progreso y eficacia de la labor del CDB hasta la fecha y conciben nuevos planes y soluciones para la crisis mundial de la diversidad biológica.

Many decisions of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) contain language on indigenous peoples and local communities*, for instance on their full and effective participation, impacts on their lands and livelihoods, the value and contribution of their traditional knowledge and customary sustainable use, and the need for support in capacity building.

A new action plan is being developed at COP11 to support and encourage indigenous peoples in their customary sustainable practices, which reflect their careful and protective interaction with the natural environment. Sustainable Development Update: Building resilience through customary sustainable use of biodiversity

"Since almost a decade back, the Resilience and Development Programme (SwedBio) and partners such as Forest Peoples ProgrammeTebtebba Foundation and the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) have been working for strengthening governance in indigenous territories based on customary sustainable use. The work by SwedBio and partners was initiated by supporting good cases, including presenting them and describing the key factors for success behind. These pilot cases, covering a broad range of social ecological systems, have successively formed a base for building better international policies that adopt customary sustainable use (CSU) as a means for strengthened resilience of biological diversity and contribution to human wellbeing among indigenous peoples and local communities."
