Description
Europe's forests are among the most degraded on the planet and old growth forests are now almost extinct. Six case studies show how political structures and policies favouring private sector profits over long-term sustainability underlie pollution, logging, road-building and illegal clearance. Through aid, trade and private sector investment, western Europe is exporting the same failed forestry policies to the Third World. The report highlights risks to forests in eastern Europe caused by the transition to 'free-market' systems and identifies necessary reforms.
