Article 10c of the Convention
on Biological Diversity (CBD) requires States "to
protect and encourage the customary use of biological
resources in accordance with traditional cultural practices
that are compatible with conservation or sustainable use
requirements". This study of and by the indigenous
peoples of the Upper Caura river, Venezuela, demonstrates
that their traditional practices clearly meet these requirements.
Encouragingly, the legal framework for State compliance
already exists and merely needs to be put into practice
to protect this vital ecosystem and the peoples who have
long cared for it.
