Description
In Uruguay there is growing opposition to the large-scale monoculture plantations of eucalyptus and pine which are covering ever larger areas of land. The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), originally set up to certify forestry companies that demonstrate responsible management, has certified at least one company with a track record of environmental destruction (desiccation of wetlands) and anti-union policies (including threatening to chase woodworkers' union organizers off its property at gunpoint). These certifications are eroding the international credibility of the FSC.
By providing documented information and analysis of the main certified companies running large-scale monoculture tree plantations in Uruguay, this report aims to contribute to the review of plantation certification that the FSC itself is currently conducting, as well as assist local organisations fighting against monoculture plantations.
