Comunicado de prensa: Líderes indígenas de Costa Rica presentan en Washington D.C., ante la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, la situación de la ocupación ilegal de sus territorios

15 marzo 2013, Washington, DC
:Líderes indígenas del Pacífico Sur y Zona Norte de Costa Rica han viajado a los Estados Unidos para presentar en una audiencia ante la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos. El sábado 16 de marzo a las 2:30pm (hora de Costa Rica), los líderes Pablo Sivas Sivas del Pueblo Teribe, Sergio Rojas Ortiz del Clan Uniwak del Pueblo Bribri y Eliecer Velas Álvarez del pueblo Malecu presentarán oralmente ante la Comisión y otros observadores internacionales la situación de la ocupación masiva e ilegal de sus territorios. En la misma audiencia, hará una presentación el Gobierno de Costa Rica. Dice el Sr. Rojas, "Estamos felices que la Comisión Interamericana, uno de los órganos más importantes en este hemisferio para la defensa y protección de los derechos humanos, ha tomado un intéres en los territorios y derechos de los pueblos indígenas de Costa Rica."

On 5th September 2012, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the Organisation of American States issued a press release in which it urged the Venezuelan Government to carry out an investigation in the Upper Ocamo village of Irotatheri where the alleged massacre of as many as 80 people is supposed to have taken place. On 10th September 2012, the IACHR issued a further press statement noting that Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela had officially 'denounced' the Convention. Inter-American Court of Human Rights adopts compliance orders in the Saramaka People v. Suriname case, 23 Nov 2011

On 23 November 2011, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights adopted
compliance orders in the Saramaka People v. Suriname case. The Court finds that Suriname has failed to comply with the most important of its orders made in the 2007 judgment; holds that Suriname is in some respects "in direct contravention of the Court's decision and, accordingly, of the State's international treaty obligations;" and decides to convene a hearing on the case during 2012. Press Release: Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Agrees to hear case of Indigenous Peoples in Raposa Serra do Sol, Brazil

After years of waiting, during which they suffered from violent attacks and the degradation of their ancestral lands, the Ingaricó, Macuxi, Patamona, Taurepang and Wapichana indigenous peoples of Raposa Serra do Sol received a favorable decision by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.  During its last session at the end of October, the Commission issued an admissibility decision in their case against the Government of Brazil. In doing so, the Commission signaled not only that the Government’s treatment of indigenous peoples in Raposa may constitute a violation of their human rights, but that the Commission is now ready to enter its final stage of review of the case and issue a concluding report.

Brazilian advocates' and indigenous organizations' letter to Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) concerning Belo Monte hydroelectric dam project in Brazil

A group of Brazilian advocates and indigenous organizations concerned about the large Belo Monte hydroelectric dam project in Brazil have written to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), urging them to adopt the Brazil - Raposa do Sol case, which is being assisted by Forest Peoples Programme, in this October session of the Commission.
