The South Rupununi District Council (SRDC) established its Monitoring Programme at a meeting in Shorinab (Shulinab) on 7 July 2013, following a recommendation arising out of the Wapichan Territorial Management Plan. This Plan was developed over several years, following numerous village and district-level meetings during which SRDC arrived at consensus on its various aspects, goals and planned actions, namely, the sustainable use, management and development of Wapichan lands and resources.

The Monitoring Programme was established with the purpose of safeguarding and protecting Wapichan lands, territories, and resources, including through collaborative arrangements with the Government, where appropriate and agreed. SRDC are pleased now to present the Wapichan Environmental Monitoring Report. This report provides some background information on the Monitoring Programme; provides a case study that details the work of the Programme in relation to the mining at Marudi Mountain; and presents SRDC's recommendations and requests.
