Empowering Women, Gender Roles, and Climate Change - An interview with Immaculata Casimero

Immaculata Casimero is a Wapichan woman and is a member of the Wapichan Wiizi Women’s Movement, as well as being Communications Officer at the South Rupununi District Council. She spoke to us about her work carrying out women’s rights workshops in communities, how the Wapichan peoples are affected by climate change, and how indigenous voices were represented at COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021.

The  UNFCCC Climate Conference (COP26) in Glasgow last month came at a critical point in the fight against climate change and the ecological and humanitarian crisis facing humanity and the planet. Despite the pandemic, hundreds of Indigenous Peoples and Local Community leaders and activists made it to Glasgow.

Marutu Tao (Marudi Mountain) is one of a network of mountains in Guyana, that are a core component of Wapichan cultural heritage, but mining activities on it are threatening the environment, the cultural heritage and way of life of the Wapichan.

Collaborating with the district hospital and the police, the SRDC embarked on several activities to protect their communities. They worked with communities to educate and raise awareness to ensure that Wapichan people across the 21 villages have up-to-date and accurate information about the pandemic; they blocked 15 illegal border crossings between Guyana and Brazil; and they monitored checkpoints and gates into Wapichan territory.

El SRDC se embarcó en varias actividades destinadas a proteger nuestras comunidades. Trabajaron con las comunidades para educar y concienciar a fin de garantizar que los habitantes de Wapichan de las 21 aldeas dispusieran de información actualizada y precisa sobre la pandemia; bloquearon 15 cruces fronterizos ilegales entre Guyana y el Brasil; y vigilaron los puestos de control y las puertas de entrada al territorio Wapichan.

Delegates from the 'Closing the Gap' forum on human rights, deforestation and supply chains are visiting Paris to call on governments and companies to put in place strong rights protections for communities and their forests, and share a set of technical recommendation they have developed for achieving this.
