This open letter calls on the European Union (EU) to include rights to self-determination, to lands, territories and resource, and to free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) in the upcoming Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence.

Cette lettre ouverte appelle l'Union Européenne (UE) à inclure les droits à l'autodétermination, aux terres, territoires et ressources, et au consentement préalable, libre et éclairé (FPIC) dans la prochaine directive sur le devoir de vigilance des entreprises en matière de durabilité.

Esta carta abierta hace un llamado a la Unión Europea (UE) para que incluya los derechos a la autodeterminación, a las tierras, territorios y recursos, y al consentimiento libre, previo e informado (CLPI) en la próxima Directiva sobre Diligencia Debida de las Empresas en materia de Sostenibilidad (DDDES).

As the European Union moves forward on mandatory company due diligence legislation to place different sets of legal obligations on companies, several EU member states are obstructing the inclusion of protection for the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.

Negotiations between the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU are set to finalise the EU regulation on deforestation-free products and agree on a compromise for a final text to be adopted. Today, only France continues to impede progress by blocking any attempt in the EU negotiations to keep the inclusion of the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.

Alors que les négociations sur le règlement européen sur la déforestation importée se finalisent à Bruxelles, les partisans de l’exploitation forestières et les opposants à la protection des droits humains dans les chaines d’approvisionnement des entreprises redoublent d'efforts pour affaiblir la loi. Aujourd'hui, la France continue d'entraver ce progrès en bloquant toute tentative dans les négociations de l'UE pour maintenir l'inclusion des droits des peuples autochtones et des communautés locales.

FPP analyses the European Commission's proposal for a directive on corporate sustainability due diligence and its potential impacts for forest peoples, including the many gaps to fill to ensure an effective protection of the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.

El nuevo reglamento sobre deforestación propuesto por la Comisión Europea es un paso positivo significativo. Sin embargo, sigue presentando algunas lagunas importantes, entre las que se destaca el que no exista una garantía del respeto de los derechos de los pueblos indígenas y las comunidades de los bosques.

In this new briefing, NGOs highlight that implementing a comprehensive set of measures and initiatives, including new legislation, is essential to reduce the EU’s footprint on the world’s natural ecosystems.

In light of the forest fires in Brazil, Forest Peoples Programme and others ask the EU to urgently address complicity in current deforestation crisis and instruct the European Commission to work on EU regulation to end deforestation.

After taking part in meetings with the Amsterdam Declarations Partnership and DG Trade to present rights-based solutions for achieving deforestation-free trade, the 'Closing the Gap' delegation are travelling to Brussels to deliver a petition signed by 160,000 people urging EC President Jean-Claude Juncker to uphold the European Union’s international commitment to halt deforestation by 2020 by supporting an EU Action Plan to protect forests and respect forest peoples’ rights.

FPP has joined with other NGOs to call on the European Commission to develop an Action Plan on deforestation and degradation. A feasibility study on policy options to step up EU action against deforestation is due to be made public very shortly by the Commission, along with a decision on the next steps.
