Letter from FPP to the President of Kenya in protest at attacks on the Ogiek community

Forest Peoples Programme was alarmed to learn of events occurring at Chepyuk Forest, on the slopes of Mount Elgon. According to the reports we have received, the indigenous Ogiek community living there was attacked, two people have been killed and other severely wounded, and two hundred houses have been burned down. The aggressors are reported to be from the Pok (Sabaot) group, the locally dominant group.

Les Ogiek de la Forêt de Mau au KenyaLe massif forestier de Mau est la région forestière indigène la plus vaste située au voisinage de massifs montagneux de l’Afrique de l’Est. Il couvre une superficie d’environ 350 000 ha. Il est localisé à 170 km environ au nord ouest de Nairobi et s’étend le long du district de Kericho à l’ouest, du district de Narok au sud, du district de Nakuru au nord et de celui de Bomet au sud-ouest.
