As the world marks 10 years since the formal adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by the General Assembly, FPP celebrates and supports the many gains made for indigenous peoples in legal advancements, key legal cases fought and won, increasing global respect, recognition and increasing, strong solidarity and collaborative work across the globe.

El mundo está marcando el décimo aniversario de la adopción formal de la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas (DNUDPI) por la Asamblea General. El Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) celebra y apoya los numerosos logros obtenidos para los pueblos indígenas en los últimos diez años en lo referente a avances jurídicos, casos legales clave luchados y ganados, aumento del respeto y del reconocimiento a nivel mundial, y trabajo de solidaridad y colaborativo sólido cada vez mayor a lo largo del mundo.

A side event to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. In this event, the Amerindian Peoples Association (APA) will review the treatment of indigenous peoples' rights in national policies and practices in the mining, forestry, infrastructure, conservation and climate finance sectors.The event will be held on the 16th May 2014.To view the flyer for this event please click here

While indigenous peoples are five percent of the global population, they comprise fifteen percent of the poorest of the poor. Throughout centuries, indigenous peoples have been asserting and defending their lands, territories and resources as the source of their distinct identities, cultures and ways of life. They continue to voice and demand the recognition of their collective rights as a matter of attaining equality and dignity for all.

This community friendly animation video explains the basic concept of climate change and its disproportionate impacts to Indigenous Peoples (IP). It elaborates on the international agreement to mitigate the impacts of climate change, particularly Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) and the key concerns of indigenous peoples. The video also highlights the collective rights of indigenous peoples enshrined in United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Another highlight of the video is on the roles and contributions of indigenous women in the natural resource management.

A Motion sponsored by FPP and passed by IUCN membership at the 5th World Conservation Congress regarding the urgent need to improve implementation of the World Heritage Convention in relation to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

This motion recommends ways in which IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, can encourage the World Heritage Committee to ensure that its work is in compliance with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).Click here to read the motion.

As awareness of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples has grown, we as indigenous peoples have actively sought the implementation of this document in all institutions, policies and programmes that have the potential to impact us. To be able to address the exclusion that indigenous peoples face at the grassroots, we have consistently fought for the right to full and effective participation in mechanisms that affect us. Moving the battle upstream is not easy as we have to educate ourselves in a language and cultural environment that is far removed from our own processes of participation and decision-making. It takes time away from the priority – the persistent violation of our rights and resources at the community level.

Mientras que  la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los derechos de los pueblos indígenas iba dándose a conocer, los pueblos indígenas hemos procurado activamente que este documento se aplique en todas las instituciones, políticas y programas que puedan afectarnos. Para poder abordar la exclusión a la que se enfrentan los pueblos indígenas en el plano local, hemos luchado constantemente por el derecho a participar de manera plena y efectiva en los mecanismos que nos afectan. Llevar esta lucha a niveles superiores no es fácil, porque tenemos que aprender un lenguaje y un entorno cultural muy distintos de los que se aplican en nuestros propios procesos de participación y de toma de decisiones. Eso significa que tenemos menos tiempo para dedicar a la prioridad de luchar contra la persistente violación de nuestros derechos y recursos a nivel comunitario.

La sensibilisation à la Déclaration des Nations Unies sur les droits des peuples autochtones ayant cru, nous, peuples autochtones, avons œuvré pour la mise en œuvre de ce document dans toutes les institutions, politiques et programmes qui peuvent potentiellement nous impacter. Afin de pouvoir aborder à la racine l'exclusion à laquelle les peuples autochtones sont confrontés, nous avons constamment lutté pour le droit à la participation pleine et effective aux mécanismes qui nous affectent. Il est difficile de faire progresser cette lutte, car nous devons nous familiariser avec un langage et un environnement culturel totalement étrangers à nos processus de participation et de prise de décisions. Cela nous détourne de notre priorité, la violation incessante de nos droits et ressources au niveau communautaire.
