Although they are the ancestral owners of the Peruvian Amazon, for centuries indigenous peoples have been dispossessed, displaced and even exterminated to guarantee the advance of highly lucrative extractive activities. Even today, indigenous Peruvians endure the plundering and destruction of their territories.

A pesar de ser propietarios ancestrales de la Amazonía peruana, durante los últimos siglos los pueblos indígenas han sido despojados, desplazados y hasta exterminados para garantizar la buena marcha de las actividades extractivas, altamente lucrativas. Todavía hoy soportan el despojo y la destrucción de sus territorios.

On 1st September 2014 Edwin Chota and three indigenous Asheninka leaders were murdered while defending their forests. Through their widows, family and friends we learn about their on going fight for land titling in Peru. This story is one of many examples of Indigenous Peoples defending the forest and paying the ultimate sacrifice, launched just ahead of COP20 in Lima.

 The report, Revealing the Hidden: Indigenous perspectives on deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon was compiled by Peru’s national indigenous peoples’ organisation (AIDESEP) and international human rights organisation, Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) and is based on the analysis and perspectives of Peru’s indigenous leaders and organisations whose lives, lands and livelihoods are threatened by deforestation on a daily basis.

 El informe, Haciendo visible lo invisible: perspectivas indígenas sobre la deforestación en la Amazonía Peruana fue recopilado por la organización nacional de pueblos indígenas de Perú, AIDESEP, y una organización internacional de derechos humanos, el Forest Peoples Programme (FPP). Los resultados se basan en el análisis de las organizaciones y líderes indígenas del Perú, para quienes las vidas, tierras y medios de vida de sus pueblos se encuentran amenazados diariamente por la deforestación.

Dear Friends,The importance of ensuring respect for the rights of forest peoples’ to control their forests, lands and livelihoods, becomes ever clearer and yet more contested. As the articles in this edition of our newsletter starkly reveal, land and resource grabs are not just being imposed by commercial developers but are being actively promoted by governments, whose principle responsibility should be to protect the rights of citizens. Yet these same impositions are also being resisted, sometimes at great personal cost, by local communities and indigenous peoples.

This struggle between ‘development’ and ‘conservation’ is being played out in global policy negotiations, with the decisions of so-called policy-makers being imposed on the ground. But not everything is or should be ‘top down’. Enduring solutions also spring from the grassroots, from the ‘bottom up’.

Esta lucha entre el «desarrollo» y la «conservación» se está manteniendo en el campo de las negociaciones mundiales de políticas, con las decisiones de los denominados «encargados de la formulación de políticas» impuestas sobre el terreno. El movimiento indígena en la Amazonia peruana ha movilizado durante las ultimas semanas para manifestar su rechazo de operaciones destructivas de las empresas petroleras en sus territorios. La movilización además tiene el fin de comunicar su profunda preocupación acerca de planes gubernamentales de debilitar protecciones legales para sus derechos a la tierra.
