US Congress raises heat on World Bank over China fears

The US Congress is putting new pressure on the World Bank to preserve its social and environmental rules for projects in developing countries amid fears that the emergence of rivals  backed by China may force it to weaken standards.The World Bank is next year expected to wrap up a review of its safeguards, which were introduced in the 1980s in response to criticism of environmental damage and rights violations linked to bank-funded megaprojects.

Tanzania Indigenous Peoples Civil Societies voice serious concerns over proposed World Bank Environmental and Social Framework

Tanzania indigenous organisations have written to the World Bank to express their concern at the overall weakening of the policy requirements for indigenous peoples in the draft of the proposed World Bank Environmental and Social Safeguards (ESS). Concerns include implications for the denial of the existence and rights of indigenous peoples under international human rights law, lack of meaningful and effective participation, forced eviction and lack of access to information.

Indigenous forest peoples meet with head of UN human rights to urge integration of indigenous peoples' rights in combating climate change

On Monday 8th December indigenous peoples from around the world gathered in Lima to hold a public hearing with Vicky Tauli Corpuz, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Assembling for the latest UN climate conference, indigenous peoples travelled to Peru to raise awareness about the destruction of their forests and call for a human-rights based approach to climate change.

With the theme “Biodiversity for Sustainable Development”, the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD COP 12) was held from 6th to 17th October 2014 in Pyeongchang, Korea. The meeting aimed at raising international awareness on the essential role of biodiversity and its contribution to sustainable development, as well as at highlighting biodiversity in the context of the post-2015 Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

FPP organised a seminar entitled, Evaluating Investment Projects:  Legal and Good Governance Considerations, in September 2014 in Kumba, Western Cameroon. The purpose of the meeting was to share information on current international law and up-to-date industrial standards for industrial companies seeking lands for agribusiness development. This included communities impacted by the SGSOC/Herakles palm oil development around Mount Cameroon and participants from outside the region whose lands are impacted by other large development projects.

En septiembre de 2014 el FPP organizó un seminario titulado Evaluación de proyectos de inversión - Consideraciones jurídicas y de buena gobernanza en Kumba, oeste de Camerún. La finalidad de la reunión era compartir información sobre el derecho internacional actual y sobre las normas industriales actualizadas aplicables a las empresas que buscan tierras para desarrollar agronegocios. En él participaron comunidades afectadas por las actividades de la empresa de aceite de palma SGSOC/Herakles alrededor del Monte Camerún, así como comunidades de fuera de la región cuyas tierras se ven afectadas por otros proyectos de desarrollo de gran envergadura.

Peru’s government fails to tackle violence and forest destruction in the Peruvian Amazon

In April 2014, in a tragic premonition of what was to come, the leaders of Saweto, an Ashaninka village in the Peruvian Amazon, requested urgent measures from the Peruvian government to ‘prevent any attempt on our lives’. The threat had come from loggers ‘in reprisal’ for the community’s longstanding efforts to document and denounce illegal logging in their territory.

En abril de 2014, en un trágico presentimiento de lo que estaba por suceder, los líderes de Saweto, una comunidad Asháninka de la Amazonía peruana, solicitaron al Gobierno peruano medidas urgentes para “prevenir cualquier atentado contra nuestras vidas”. Esta amenaza fue hecha por madereros “en represalia” por los esfuerzos hechos por la comunidad desde hace mucho tiempo para documentar y denunciar la tala ilegal en su territorio.
