Nearly all forests across the globe are inhabited. The peoples who live there have customary rights and have developed ways of life and traditional knowledge that are attuned to their forest environments.

This is Volume VI, 2013-2014, of the series of compilations of United Nations treaty body jurisprudence pertaining to indigenous peoples. It covers the years 2013 and 2014.   It also contains the advice of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and selected observations and recommendations of ‘Special Procedures’ of the Human Rights Council, such as Special Rapporteurs and Independent Experts. Contrary to previous volumes, it no longer contains the results of the Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review.

On 4th June, the regional organisation of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon in Venezuela (ORPIA) issued an appeal to President Maduro and the national administration to halt the mining that is destroying the lands and livelihoods of the indigenous peoples of the States of Amazonas and Bolivar.

The palm oil industry’s bad reputation has survived the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which commits member companies to social and environmental sustainability. The RSPO logo certification is visible on many everyday groceries containing palm oil.  However whilst RSPO boasts many of the biggest palm oil producers and buyers among its members, displacement of indigenous peoples from their lands, farms and forests is rife.

La mala reputación del sector del aceite de palma no ha desaparecido después de la creación de la Mesa Redonda sobre el Aceite de Palma Sostenible (RSPO por sus siglas en inglés), la cual compromete a sus empresas miembros con la sostenibilidad social y ambiental. El logotipo de certificación de la RSPO es visible en muchos alimentos de consumo diario que contienen aceite de palma. Sin embargo, mientras que la RSPO cuenta con muchos de los mayores productores y compradores del aceite de palma entre sus miembros, el desplazamiento de los pueblos indígenas obligados a abandonar sus tierras, granjas y bosques es abundante y extendido.

Néanmoins, bien que la RSPO compte parmi ses membres bon nombre des plus grands producteurs et acheteurs d’huile de palme, les déplacements de peuples autochtones de leurs terres, fermes et forêts sont répandus.

Reputasi buruk industri kelapa sawit telah “berhasil” bertahan di Roundtable  on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), yang mengikat perusahaan anggotanya untuk mewujudkan keberlanjutan sosial dan lingkungan. Sertifikasi logo RSPO terlihat di banyak bahan makanan sehari-hari yang mengandung minyak sawit. Namun, meskipun RSPO membanggakan banyaknya produsen dan pembeli minyak sawit terbesar di antara para anggotanya, penggusuran masyarakat adat dari tanah, ladang dan hutan mereka marak terjadi.

The RSPO’s Complaints Panel has upheld the Forest Peoples Programme in its complaint against Golden Agri Resources, which was seeking to expand 18 of its operations in Kalimantan. After concluding that it has ‘reasonable grounds’ to conclude that the company is in violation of several RSPO norms, the latest ‘determination’ by the Panel notes:"The Panel hereby prohibits GAR from acquiring or developing any new areas until this complaint has been dealt with to the satisfaction of the Complaints Panel."
