Last week, Politico reported that Sweden, among some other EU countries, is pushing back on incorporating stronger human rights due diligence requirements in the EU’s proposed deforestation regulation, which is in the last stages of trilogue negotiations.

La semaine dernière, Politico a informé que la Suède, entre autres pays européens, s’opposait à l’intégration d’exigences plus strictes en matière de protection des droits humains dans le projet de règlement de l’UE concernant la déforestation, qui en est aux derniers stades de négociation en trilogue.

La semana pasada, Politico publicó que Suecia, entre algunos otros países de la UE, se opone a la incorporación de requisitos más estrictos de diligencia debida en materia de derechos humanos en la propuesta de reglamento de la UE sobre deforestación, que se encuentra en las últimas fases de las negociaciones tripartitas.

the practice of conservation and the respect for human rights can be tricky to navigate. When is it acceptable to restrict a community’s right to hunt or use natural resources it has traditionally accessed? Can a protected area be created on community lands without their consent?

Peru’s approach to conservation and natural resources is discriminatory and violates the human rights of indigenous peoples. Rather than marginalising these peoples, who have a long and varied history of conservation, conservation actors must recognise their enormous contribution to Peru’s natural heritage, and ally themselves with these communities against the true enemies of nature.
