Borneo’s borderlands – harbouring some of the oldest and most biodiverse tropical rainforests in the world - are at the epicentre of Indonesia and Malaysia’s oil palm expansion where over half of all deforestation is attributed to the monocrop, threating the home of thousands of indigenous communities.

 

Since 2004, the lands and resin forests of the Toba Batak community of Ompu Ronggur have been cleared and replaced by eucalyptus plantations of PT Toba Pulp Lestari [TPL], a pulp company owned by Singapore-based Raja Garuda Mas Group.

This short film was produced by Pusaka in 2020, documenting the indigenous Wambon Tekamerop's relationship with their ancestral rainforest in Kali Kao, Papua Province, Indonesia.

This video is part of the Global Network for Advanced Management's Palm Oil 2016 online case study and features Marcus Colchester of the Forest Peoples Programme as he outlines the human impact of the Indonesian palm oil industry.

'From our Ancestors' is a very powerful and moving story about the Pandumaan and Sipituhuta community in North Sumatra, Indonesia. They are fighting to stop the growth of pulp plantations owned by PT Toba Pulp Lestari. Previously formerly affiliated with pulp and paper giant, Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) and its parent Royal Golden Eagle (RGE), and is still controlled by notorious Indonesian business tycoon Sukanto Tanoto through holding companies.
