France: the last barrier to forest peoples’ protection in EU law

Negotiations between the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU are set to finalise the EU regulation on deforestation-free products and agree on a compromise for a final text to be adopted. Today, only France continues to impede progress by blocking any attempt in the EU negotiations to keep the inclusion of the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.

On Thursday 10 November, several prominent Indigenous organisations representing the Kichwa people of the San Martin region in Peru, along with Forest Peoples Programme, held a webinar to launch a new report which explores how two State protected areas threaten the continuity of the Kichwa people’s territorial occupation and traditional forms of control and usufruct in that region.

This week more than fifty Indigenous and human rights organisations and dozens of individuals from across Peru and internationally issued a statement condemning attempts by the Peruvian National Police and the Ocho Sur palm oil group to criminalise human rights defender Linda Vigo for her work to defend Indigenous peoples’ rights in the Ucayali region of the Peruvian Amazon.

Between 24 and 25 October 2022, members of the Shipibo-Konibo Indigenous community of Santa Clara de Uchunya met in Yarinacocha to reflect on their efforts past and present to defend their ancestral territory against agribusiness-led land trafficking and deforestation and oil palm expansion in the Ucayali region of the Peruvian Amazon. They issued the following agreement and made additional statements during a press conference with regional media.

Entre el 24 y el 25 de octubre de 2022, miembros de la comunidad indígena Shipibo-Konibo de Santa Clara de Uchunya se reunieron en Yarinacocha. En la reunión se reflexionó sobre sus esfuerzos pasados y presentes para defender su territorio ancestral contra el tráfico de tierras, la deforestación y la expansión de la palma aceitera impulsados por la agroindustria en la región de Ucayali de la Amazonía peruana. Se emitió el siguiente acuerdo e hicieron declaraciones adicionales durante una conferencia de prensa con los medios de comunicación regionales.
