Today, we are meeting Chief Calvin Craigan of the Shishalh First Nation on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. To get to him requires a trip up the coast from Vancouver.

The United Nations’ Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues has made a series of recommendations to promote and protect the rights of indigenous peoples in the context of conservation activities.

Indigenous and human rights organisations from across the Americas are working together to develop a specific methodology for investigating, documenting and fighting indigenous women's cases through the justice system. The organisations involved include ONIC, the National Indigenous Organisation of Colombia; COAJ, the Board of Indigenous Organisations of Jujuy (Argentina); SER, Mixe People's Services (Mexico); QNW, Quebec Native Women (Canada); and AJDH, Lawyers for Justice and Human Rights (Mexico). This work is being carried out within the framework of a project called Ethnic and gender-based discrimination in the Americas: the case of indigenous women.

Organizaciones indígenas y de derechos humanos como son la Organización Nacional Indígena de Colombia (ONIC), el Consejo de Organizaciones Aborígenes de Jujuy (COAJ), Servicios del Pueblo Mixe (SER), Femmes autochtones du Québec (FAQ) y Abogadas y Abogados para la Justicia y los Derechos Humanos (AJDH) trabajan juntas para desarrollar una metodología específica para investigar, documentar y litigar los casos de mujeres indígenas en el marco de un proyecto llamado Discriminación étnica y de género en las Américas: el caso de las mujeres indígenas (el Proyecto).

"GENEVA (07 August 2013) –States need to do more to honour and strengthen their treaties with indigenous peoples, no matter how long ago they were signed, UN human rights chief Navi Pillay has said in a statement to mark International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on 9 August.“Even when signed or otherwise agreed more than a century ago, many treaties remain the cornerstone for the protection of the identity, land and customs of indigenous peoples, determining the relationship they have with the State. They are thus of major significance to human rights today,” she said.

Canada’s Auditor General commented in her June 2011 report that living conditions in First Nations reserves are still much worse than elsewhere in Canada. Reflecting on her ten years in office, she argued that a fundamental change is needed to address this issue. In 2010, Canada finally endorsed the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) after being one of four governments to vote against it during its passage through the General Assembly in 2007.

En su informe de junio de 2011  la Auditora General de Canadá comentó que las condiciones de vida en las reservas de las Naciones Originarias siguen siendo mucho peores que en el resto de Canadá. Reflexionando sobre sus diez años en el puesto, opinó que se necesita un cambio fundamental para poder abordar esta cuestión. Canadá ratificó por fin la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los derechos de los pueblos indígenas (DNUDPI)  en 2010, después de ser uno de los cuatro gobiernos que votaron en su contra cuando pasó por la Asamblea General en 2007.

You can download it here As mentioned in Forest Peoples Programme’s February E-Newsletter, a meeting was held at the IUCN CEESP Sharing Power conference in Whakatane, New Zealand, January 2011, between indigenous representatives, the chairs of three IUCN commissions (CEESP, WCPA and SSC) and sub-commissions (TILCEPA and TGER), key staff of the IUCN secretariat (the Director of the Environment and Development Programme and the Senior Adviser on Social Policy), and other staff from IUCN, Conservation International and Forest Peoples Programme.The main outcome of the meeting and subsequent follow-up discussions was an agreement to implement a series of measures to review the implementation of resolutions related to indigenous peoples adopted at the 4th World Conservation Congress (WCC4) in 2008 and to advance their implementation should there be a gap.

La nota conceptual para las evaluaciones pilotas de Whakatane ha sido concluido. Se puede descargar aquiTal y como se mencionó en el boletín electrónico del FPP de febrero pasado, se llevó a cabo una reunión en la Conferencia de “Compartir el poder” de la UICN CPAES realizada en Whakatane, Nueva Zelandia en enero 2011, entre los representantes indígenas, los presidentes de las tres comisiones de la UICN (CPAES,CMAP y CSE) y las sub-comisiones TILCEPA (por sus siglas en inglés) y TGER (por sus siglas en inglés), además de personal clave de la secretaría de la UICN (el Director del Programa del Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo, y el Asesor Sénior en Políticas Sociales), y otros funcionarios de la UICN, de la ONG Conservación Internacional y del FPP. El resultado principal de dicha reunión y de las discusiones de seguimiento posteriores, fue un acuerdo para implementar una serie de medidas con el fin de evaluar la implementación de las resoluciones relacionadas con los pueblos indígenas, adoptadas en el 4° Congreso Mundial de la Naturaleza de la UICN (WCC4) en 2008. De esta manera se pueden identificar vacíos entre los compromisos y la práctica para ayudar a avanzar la implementación de las resoluciones.
