30 January 2019, Pucallpa. On the eve of a public forum on deforestation and threats to human rights defenders in the city of Pucallpa, representatives of indigenous peoples’ communities and organisations from across the Amazonian regions of Ucayali and San Martin issued an
Amicus Curiae Brief submitted by Global Justice Centre of New York and Forest Peoples Programme to the Civil Court of San Martin in the Case of the Kichwa Native Community of Nuevo Lamas vs Regional Government of San Martin and the Natural Protected Areas Service of Peru (SERNANP).
Although they are the ancestral owners of the Peruvian Amazon, for centuries indigenous peoples have been dispossessed, displaced and even exterminated to guarantee the advance of highly lucrative extractive activities. Even today, indigenous Peruvians endure the plundering and destruction of their territories.
A candlelit ceremony was held to commemorate all the indigenous leaders that have been killed since the adoption of the Colombian Peace Accords, two years ago. The emotional event took place in Riosucio, Caldas, on 7 December 2018.
