The UNFCCC Climate Conference (COP27) begins on November 6 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. COP27 comes at a critical point in the fight against climate change, and many Indigenous Peoples and Local Community representatives will be attending.

Immaculata Casimero is a Wapichan woman and is a member of the Wapichan Wiizi Women’s Movement, as well as being Communications Officer at the South Rupununi District Council. She spoke to us about her work carrying out women’s rights workshops in communities, how the Wapichan peoples are affected by climate change, and how indigenous voices were represented at COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021.

Indigenous peoples have long called for national and global actions to tackle the root causes of climate and environmental destruction and associated rights abuse. Yet, from their experience, global climate policies developed and implemented to date have often marginalised their communities and failed to uphold their rights.

In the lead-up to historic agreements on climate and nature being made in Glasgow at COP26, more than 180 civil society and indigenous organisations, and academics, from more than 50 countries, have signed an open letter that that calls on world leaders to put human rights at the centre of climate and environmental policy.

December 11 2015: It is 11.30 in the morning in Paris, the negotiation among the members of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) is crucial to build consensus towards a new global climate agreement, an agreement that seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and thus mitigate climate change.
