Following high profile cases of police violence and killings of rural people protesting land grabs, a new alliance of rural people - indigenous peoples, farmers, workers and landless people as well as supportive NGOs - is demanding the repeal of laws which allow the State to expropriate people's lands and resources in favour or large businesses. They are also demanding the passing of new laws that secure the people's rights in land and ensure ecological justice, through agrarian reforms and the recognition of indigenous peoples' rights.

With the rapid growth of industrial prawn production there has been a corresponding upsurge in eco-label certification schemes that seek to improve the industry. However, meaningful human rights considerations are rarely incorporated in the formulation of these schemes. The Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) continues to work with coastal community networks to raise awareness of the problems of industrial aquaculture and to push for meaningful human rights considerations in the development of future eco-labelling schemes.

Con el rápido crecimiento de la producción industrial de gambas se ha producido un aumento paralelo de los sistemas de certificación con etiqueta ecológica que tienen como fin mejorar el sector. No obstante, rara vez se tienen en cuenta consideraciones coherentes sobre los derechos humanos en la creación de esos sistemas. El Programa para los Pueblos de los Bosques (FPP) continúa trabajando con redes de comunidades costeras para sensibilizar sobre los problemas de la acuicultura industrial y para que se tengan en cuenta consideraciones coherentes sobre los derechos humanos a la hora de crear futuros sistemas de etiquetado ecológico.

'Selling the Seas', a film produced by The Ecologist Film Unit with the Indonesian NGO, KIARA and FPP exposes the growing public opposition to the Indonesian government's plans to clear a further 700,000 hectares of coast, much of it mangrove, threatening the livelihoods of fisherfolk and other coastal peoples. KIARA demands that northern supermarkets and certifiers pay more attention to the harsh social and environmental costs of inappropriate, industrial shrimp and prawn production. Selling the Seas, una película producida por The Ecologist Film Unit con la ONG indonesa KIARA y el FPP expone la creciente oposición del público a los planes del Gobierno de Indonesia para despejar otras 700 000 hectáreas de costa, la mayor parte manglar, amenazando con ello los medios de vida de pescadores y otros pueblos costeros.
