A coalition of Indonesian Civil Society Organisations have submitted further allegations against Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) member First Resources Ltd., accusing the company of violating the RSPO Group Membership Rules for failing to disclose all of its related entities under the group’s common control.

Over the coming months, FPP will publish a series of blogs that documents the experiences that indigenous peoples, local communities and local civil society organisations in producer countries have had with certification processes.

This is the first in a series of blogs that FPP will be publishing over the coming months aiming to share experiences of certification schemes by communities and activists on the ground whose rights are impacted by agribusiness.

A new study, released today, details the main causes of these conflicts and exposes the limited resources rural Indonesians have to seek resolution and redress for land loss.

The RSPO has upheld that Peruvian palm oil miller OLPESA must not buy or process palm from deforested Indigenous lands, which were converted to a plantation which the RSPO condemned in 2016. However, its decision fails to dispel the spectre of human rights violations and large-scale deforestation from agroindustrial supply chains given the limited scope of the RSPO’s own standards.

A spokesperson for Malaysian palm oil giant, Sime Darby, who labelled NGO critics as ‘toxic entities’ and called on the government to suppress them, has sparked fury. Indigenous peoples, and youth, environmental justice, labour and human rights organisations issued a statement condemning the comments and demanding freedom of expression.
