Protokol Padiatapa MHA Enggano (FPIC Protocol of the Enggano Indigenous People)

The Enggano people of Enggano Island, West Sumatra, Indonesia, have adopted an FPIC protocol as a first step in their efforts to reassert control over their land and future. The FPIC protocol of the Enggano people serves two purposes, one internal and one external. For one, the development of the FPIC protocol has supported and will continue to support the Enggano indigenous people to document their customary rules and to better understand their rights in respect of decision-making affecting them. On the other hand, the FPIC protocol serves as a guide to government and private actors on how they can respect the right of the Enggano people to FPIC. The protocol is therefore written in three languages: Enggano, Indonesian, and English. As one of the only indigenous FPIC protocols in Indonesia, the Enggano people's FPIC protocol can serve as an inspirational example of the exercise of self-determination to other indigenous peoples across the country.
