A call to ramp up efforts to prevent human rights abuses by corporations

Indigenous peoples in Geneva call on the UN, governments and corporate actors to urgently ramp up efforts to prevent human rights abuses by corporations and introduce effective mechanisms to hold them to account. Key messages include:

  1. Effective respect and protection of indigenous peoples rights to land and territories as the first and most effective measure to prevent abuses in the first place.
  2. Urgent measures to protect the lives of human rights defenders
  3. Reinforce weak and inaccessible judicial and non judicial accountability mechanisms including commodity certification systems at national and international levels to hold corporate actors and governments to account
  4. Redouble efforts to establish a binding treaty on corporate human rights abuses currently in the early stages of negotiation at the UN.
