COP16 – Ensuring that Indigenous Peoples and local communities play a key role in the monitoring and implementation of the Biodiversity Plan

The Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16) begins on 21 October in Cali, Colombia. The new Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was created at COP15 in 2022, and this year’s conference will focus on its implementation over the next 10 years by agreeing upon a Monitoring Framework. This framework will help the Convention on Biological Diversity track how successful the Parties are in implementing the GBF on the ground and help monitor the success of the framework in its goal to live in harmony with nature.
FPP will be supporting partners from the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) as well as our partners from the Transformative Pathways project and the Indigenous Navigator, who will be advocating for a rights-based approach to biodiversity conservation.
Their focus will be on ensuring their effective participation in the creation and implementation of the monitoring framework for the GBF, which will be finalised and agreed upon at COP16. A key part of this will be promoting community-based biodiversity monitoring, in which Indigenous Peoples and local communities develop vital data and information on the status of biodiversity, land use, and related traditional knowledge.
Partners from the IIFB, from the Indigenous Navigator and Transformative Pathways will be hosting side events that highlight the importance of their involvement in the implementation of a truly rights-based approach to biodiversity conservation. They will also be participating in panels of events organised by international and national NGOs and governments, as well as hosting press conferences and statements. A key part of their work will be proposing specific changes to the monitoring framework throughout the negotiations.
We’ll be posting live updates and event announcements on our website, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram feeds, and IIFB members are also available for interview.
We are collaborating with Circle of Voices and the CBD Women's Caucus to release regular short podcasts with Indigenous speakers on their priorities at COP16 - subscribe to the YouTube Channel for more information.
