Nigerian CSOs challenge Wilmar's palm oil expansion plans in Cross River State
Nigerian NGOs and community leaders have filed a formal complaint with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil challenging the proposals of the palm oil transnational Wilmar International to expand its operations in Cross River State in the Southeast of the country. The CSOs allege that Wilmar has failed to follow required legal procedures, has not recognised the full extent of communities' legal and customary rights and has failed to get the free, prior and informed consent of affected groups. They have called on the company to suspend its plans to expand its plantations until it is in full compliance with the RSPO's protocols.
