Online discussion: human rights in the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

Protecting the human rights of indigenous peoples and local communities has been shown to result in improved protection for ecosystems and biodiversity.

At present, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is working to produce a framework to guide biodiversity stewardship efforts beyond 2020 (you can view the current zero draft of the framework here).

In this interactive online discussion, we will explore the importance of including human rights-based approaches in the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and discuss ways to realise this.

This workshop is connected to an event being held from 18-20 February in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which has been co-convened by Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Forest Peoples Programme, International Development and Law Organization, Natural Justice, SwedBio at Stockholm Resilience Centre and UNEP.

Representatives from the above organisations will be taking the suggestions developed through this online workshop, and the event in Chiang Mai, to the second meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework of the CBD. We have collaborated on a document, available here, which will be the basis of the submission made to the CBD. We welcome suggestions and comments on this draft in addition to your participation in this online workshop.

We will be holding four online discussion: two in English, one in French, and one in Spanish. Please sign up below to attend, and we will be in touch shortly with the details of how to join.
