Submission to the Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights

Forest Peoples Programme has submitted a list of issues for consideration by the UN Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (CESCR) during its review of the United Kingdom (UK).
The submission highlights issues related to the protection of economic, cultural, and social rights beyond the State’s national borders, specifically relating to negative human rights impacts on indigenous and forest peoples, indigenous women, and human rights defenders.
The submission suggests three key areas for inclusion in the list of issues, and related questions, that the Committee may wish to cover in its review of the UK:
- The respect of indigenous peoples’ human rights in the provision of international climate and conservation finance;
- Plans to regulate business activities and investments of UK-domiciled corporations and financial institutions;
- Its position on collective rights that runs counter to all human rights bodies.
CESCR will adopt a list of issues for the UK to respond to during its 72nd Pre-Sessional Working Group, 6 March 2023-10 March 2023.
