Community Impacts of Asia Pulp and Paper's pulpwood plantations in South Sumatra

In early 2013, Indonesia's biggest pulp and paper company, Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), released its Forest Conservation Policy which commits the company, among other things, to respect the Free, Prior and Informed Consent of indigenous peoples and local communities, responsibly handle complaints and responsibly resolve conflicts.

Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) staff met with APP managers and consultants on several occasions in 2013 to discuss implementation of the Forest Conservation Policy. In July, FPP and local NGO, Wahana Bumi Hijau, visited communities in South Sumatra affected by APP's plantations to find out the impact of the plantations and whether APP's new policy is being effectively implemented.
