Informe: Dinámicas del Despojo - Factores detrás de la violencia y deforestación en la Amazonía peruana

Although they are the ancestral owners of the Peruvian Amazon, for centuries indigenous peoples have been dispossessed, displaced and even exterminated to guarantee the advance of highly lucrative extractive activities. Even today, indigenous Peruvians endure the plundering and destruction of their territories. Neo-extractivism and its logic continue to besiege them, while the State's response remains non-committal.
This publication (Spanish only) analyses this problem from a socio-legal angle, and poses two perspectives: the legal dynamics that permit the violation of indigenous peoples' territorial rights; and the lack of protection mechanisms for land defenders. To this end, the report analyses cases related to the Shipibo-Conibo and Kichwa peoples, with emphasis on the native communities of Santa Clara de Uchunya, in Ucayali, and Nuevo Lamas de Shapaja, in San Martín. This is due to their emblematic character, since the situations of both communities are symbolic of the challenges present throughout the Peruvian Amazon.
