Mediation: Strategy or Objective? Reflections on the conflict mediation process between PT Asiatic Persada and the Suku Anak Dalam (Batin Sembilan) communities of Jambi, Indonesia

This report summarises the various phases of the mediation process between PT Asiatic Persada and the Batin Sembilan communities in Jambi, Sumatra, including the initial phase of mediation by SETARA and the second phase of mediation facilitated by the Joint Mediation Team of the International Finance Corporation Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman (IFC CAO) and the Jambi province government. The objective of this report is to share lessons learned with other parties including communities, farmers and activists already or intending to engage in, mediation processes related to conflict in the palm oil sector, but also more widely with the IFC CAO. Both phases of mediation described in this report involved a wide range of actors including NGOs and particularly CAPPA, Perkumpulan Hijau, AGRA, Sawit Watch, FPP and the customary institutions of the Batin Sembilan. As such, the authors note that the views reflected in this report do not necessarily represent the views of all other parties involved as observers, monitors, signatories, community supporters, or those of the Batin Sembilan themselves, in this process.
