The upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), to be held in Belém do Para, Brazil between 10 and 21 November is set to be the largest mobilisation of Indigenous Peoples in the history of global climate negotiations.
Indigenous delegations have been preparing to participate and are now beginning their journeys to Belém. Guided by their ancestral wisdom and the collective strength of their peoples, they bring important messages, priorities and solutions to address the most pressing crises of our time.
Some of the collective demands Indigenous Peoples will be bringing to COP30 include:
- Increased recognition, more effective protection, and new targeted resources for Indigenous Peoples’ territories and territorial governance as a core pillar of global and national climate policies, actions and initiatives.
- Guarantee of the protection of Indigenous Peoples’ rights across all climate change commitments and initiatives (both mitigation and adaptation) by States, multilateral institutions and private sector.
- Full and effective participation in national and international climate policy-making and free, prior and informed consent to be obtained for any climate action or finance that may affect their rights.
- Recognition of traditional knowledge in addressing the intertwined human rights, biodiversity and climate crises.
- Accelerated progress and practical rolling out of international mechanisms to deliver long-term, flexible and sustainable ‘direct’ finance for Indigenous Peoples-led climate change mitigation and adaptation.
